Jeffrey grew up a military brat in a long line of Marines dating back to the American Revolution. Although he grew up relatively nomadic, he likes to claim San Diego as home, but he also claims Dallas when he occasionally swaps out rainbows for cowboy boots. Growing up in North County San Diego, his favorite professional sports team is the San Diego Padres, and he really wants the Chargers to return to San Diego!
He commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in 2021, becoming the first in his family to do so. Jeffrey went to OCS and was in Charlie Company at TBS in Quantico, Virginia; however, his color blindness limited his options for MOS, so he decided that becoming a Communications Officer would put him near the most cutting-edge technology the Marine Corps had to offer. Jeffrey returned home to Camp Pendleton, where he served as a Company Operations Officer in 9th Communication Battalion and later became the Headquarters Company Executive Officer and S-6 for I MEF Support Battalion. He continues his service in the Marine Corps Reserves, serving as the Battalion Communications Officer for 4th Medical Battalion, stationed in Miramar, CA.
He is currently studying at the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, pursuing a Master's in Business Administration with a concentration in Business Analytics, and will graduate in December. Jeffrey currently works as a Program Risk Manager for Northrop Grumman in Salt Lake City, with plans to move back to San Diego in the coming years. Jeffrey's favorite hobbies are golfing, surfing, long walks on the beach, and he recently picked up snowboarding! If you are ever in Salt Lake City, don't hesitate to reach out; he鈥檇 love to share his favorite swimming holes and ski runs.

The Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program helps veterans with a service-connected disability (at least 10%) address education and training needs to find employment opportunities. The program can be used to fund your current or future education program. Using VR&E does not generally deduct from your Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement, and it鈥檚 often recommended to use these benefits first as you may get more benefits (up to 48 months) by using VR&E first. So, if you鈥檙e a veteran, it鈥檚 important to compare and select your best option as soon as possible. The VA鈥檚 VR&E is a great way for veterans to better understand the program, process, and basic eligibility before you apply.

Stacey was born in St. Louis, MO, and raised in Southlake, TX. She graduated from Texas A&M University where she met J.R., her husband. J.R. is in the Navy, previously serving on amphibious ships as a Surface Warfare Officer for 15 years, but is now a Maritime Space Officer closing out his career at U.S. Space Command.
The Navy has been a fun ride for them: Duty stations have included Norfolk, VA; Bremerton, WA; Monterey, CA; Newport, RI; Jacksonville, FL; San Diego, CA; and currently Colorado Springs, CO. Stacey has supported her husband through 8 deployments over his 16-year service, to include his 18-month unaccompanied assignment in Sasebo, Japan.

Philomena is a retired staff sergeant of the United States Army, having honorably served for 20 years. She was born in Houston, Texas, and raised and educated in Dallas. Philomena enlisted in the Army on April 23, 1996, with a strong desire to serve her country, gain valuable experience, and establish a solid foundation for the future. She began her military career as a 77F, a petroleum supply specialist (fuel handler), assigned to an aviation battalion.
As the Army transitioned to a new classification system, her Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was redesignated as 92F. Throughout her career, most of which was spent at Fort Hood, Texas, she had the privilege of deploying twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, from 2003 to 2004 and again from 2009 to 2010. Later in her service, she was selected to become an Army recruiter for 6 years while she resided in Houston, Texas, where she earned the distinction of Best Rookie Recruiter in Houston in 2012. Philomena officially retired from active duty on May 1, 2016.
Being a soldier meant the world to her. It gave her a profound sense of purpose and belonging. Wearing the uniform wasn鈥檛 just about duty, it was about being part of something greater than self. The camaraderie, discipline, and responsibility she experienced shaped who she is today and gave her a mission to believe in. Additionally, as a sergeant, she had the responsibility of mentoring, encouraging morale, and being involved with every matter concerning enlisted members that invariably entailed delicate personal problems. These encounters with her soldiers, coupled with her own experiences, motivated her to pursue a post-military career in mental health. She is currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Education and Psychology pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in clinical psychology. She鈥檚 on the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) track and expected to graduate this December.
As she approached military retirement, she began to view it not as the end of service, but as the beginning of a new chapter, one still rooted in purpose. Her experiences, both in combat and within the military community, made her deeply aware of the mental health challenges faced by veterans. This awareness ignited a new passion: to continue serving, but this time through mental health support. She plans to work in a community mental health clinic that focuses on underserved populations, with a particular emphasis on veterans. She wants to be a part of helping those who have served navigate the emotional and psychological challenges that often follow military life.
In her free time, Philomena enjoys traveling to various parts of the country; it allows her to broaden perspective and stay culturally informed. She also runs a small business specializing in handcrafted, pure organic soaps designed to help soothe symptoms associated with chronic illnesses and certain mental health conditions. For her, this work is not just a career, it's a continuation of service.

In January, Pepperdine lost a true champion for PeppVets and a legend at Seaver College. Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science Dan Caldwell, passed away on January 8th at the age of 76. For 43 years Dan taught courses on international politics, international security, and U.S. Foreign Policy at Seaver.
Dan came to California from Oklahoma when his father鈥檚 service in the Navy brought the family to San Diego. After receiving a master鈥檚 degree in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Dan followed in his father鈥檚 footsteps and entered active duty in the Navy.
Dan began his career at Pepperdine in 1978 and made an immediate impact on both colleagues and students. He was an advocate and leader for Pepperdine鈥檚 PeppVets throughout his tenure. Dan founded the Pepperdine Committee on Student-Veterans, which ultimately led to the creation of the Office of Student Veteran Affairs in 2020. We were excited to host Dan during the grand opening of the PeppVet Center in 2023; something Dan had always hoped to see. Dan will always be here in spirit and we salute his life that was very well served. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate鈥 welcome home!
