Schmid, the fourth head coach in Pepperdine women’s tennis history, led the Waves to a West Coast Conference (WCC) Championship title in 2025 under his interim leadership. Despite six newcomers on the roster and no upperclassmen in the lineup for the majority of the season, the Waves achieved five wins against competing teams in the Power Four conferences and reached the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament. Individually, four Waves earned All-WCC recognition, including WCC Co-Freshman of the Year Alexia Harmon. Additionally, two Pepperdine players and one doubles team made the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings.

“We are thrilled to announce that Coach Schmid will guide the Pepperdine women’s tennis program into the future,” says Tanner Gardner, director of athletics. “He impressively led the team to a WCC Championship and the NCAA postseason this spring, even in the face of great adversity. His track record of excellence and familiarity with Pepperdine’s mission and values make him the ideal coach to lead this program as we compete for national championships.”

Adam Schaechterle, Pepperdine’s director of tennis and head coach of the , emphasizes Schmid’s impressive recruitment background and expressed confidence that his professional experience and proven success will complement Pepperdine’s elite competitive legacy.

“We all know he’s one of the best recruiters in college tennis, and that he will attract Grand Slam-level recruits,” says Schaechterle. “But he also has a strong vision for development and for connecting to the Malibu community that will continue to greatly benefit and serve Pepperdine’s tennis program.”

No stranger to Pepperdine tennis, Schmid served as an assistant and associate coach for the Waves men’s tennis program from 2018 to 2024 prior to taking over the women’s program. During those six seasons, Schmid helped the men’s team make four NCAA Tournament appearances, win four WCC regular-season and tournament titles and develop five All-Americans. A skilled international recruiter, Schmid also earned consecutive Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year awards in 2021 and 2022.

“It’s an incredible honor to be named head coach of Pepperdine women’s tennis,” Schmid said. “This program has a rich tradition of excellence, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead such an elite team. I’m excited to build on our legacy and continue pushing our student-athletes to thrive both on and off the court.”

Schmid began his head coaching career at Florida State University, where he was a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s program from 2016 to 2018. During his three-year tenure, the Seminoles reached the NCAA Tournament in every season.

Before pursuing his coaching career, Schmid made his mark on the court as a standout player at Mississippi State University. Over two seasons, he played under the guidance of former Pepperdine head coach Per Nilsson and helped lead the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament in 2015. Schmid climbed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to number 63 in singles and number 46 in doubles, capping his collegiate career as the ITA Southern Region’s Most Improved Player in 2015. His athletic success began at Tyler Junior College in Texas, where he was a two-time National Junior College Athletic Association All-American and secured the national title in 2013 after making the championship match in 2012.

Off the court, Schmid excelled academically as well, earning Academic All-Southeastern Conference honors twice and graduating with a degree in business management from Mississippi State University in 2015.
